Elena Called My Conscience

It might have been by chance – or part of a larger plan – that I would meet a very special exchange student. When she returned home Elena left behind $450.00 that was available to her for her own use or to take home. She instructed that it be used to help children in difficult circumstances. Elena directed half to go to the “Starving for Color” Fund that provides formula for Ukrainian orphan infants and the remainder to a badly burned Ukrainian boy in Boston Shriners’ Hospital. To put her seemingly modest gift in perspective, $450.00 represents six weeks wages that would be typically earned by a nurse in Ukraine; Elena’s mother is a nurse.

Touched by Elena’s selfless dedication to the Ukrainian Orphans and the Starving for Color Fund, I Googled the names to learn more about the fund’s founder Roksolana Tymiak-Lonchyna, DDS who had written the book, Conscience Calls, with parallel text in English and Ukrainian. This is her personal account as an international observer during the free elections of the 2004 triumphant Ukrainian Orange Revolution involving Victor Yushenko’s successful attempt to unseat the prevailing corrupt and former communist regime. Photographs are by Roksolana.

Sales of her book continue to be the primary income source for infant formula that the Hinsdale, Illinois dentist and her physician-husband, Vassyl Lonchyna deliver. They travel at their own expense to personally deliver formula to the orphanages several times each year. The goal is to continue to find additional generous friends who share the vision and compassion of a 16 year old Ukrainian exchange student, and these two tireless activists for the Orphans. Since Conscience Calls is printed in Ukraine, their economy benefits directly. All of the $17.00 net from each book goes to the orphans’ supplies. $17.00 provides approximately 17 days of high quality sustenance for one orphan.

After reading this I hope you will be as supportive and intrigued as most readers are. Order gift copies of Conscience Calls and be a hero to these Ukraine infants. It is a window into a world unknown to those of us who have known only freedom and take it for granted! It is a well written, fast read, but one not soon forgotten!!

Author and photographer, Roksolana will inscribe and autograph books purchased in honor of Elena. Information is included to order directly, as well as website reviews of the book and Roksolana’s activities. Goodwill among people can and will be achieved one person at a time. An exchange student led to conversation with Dr.Roksolana Tymiak-Lonchyna in Illinois and the revelation of her passion to provide formula to orphan infants with a bleak future. These infants are thriving on high quality formula provided by Americans, thus connecting us forever. How hopeful and satisfying. If your conscience calls how will you answer?

Please order a book for someone and ask them to do the same. All fund raising expenses are out of our personal pockets. No one benefits except the orphans. No lists of names or anything like that are kept. When possible, periodic updates of progress in this project will be provided as Roksolana is keeping a simple tally of books ordered in honor of Elena. Thanks so much and may God bless you in everything you do!

Sincerely,

Starving for Color tm is a fund to help nourish orphaned newborns in Ukraine.  It was initiated by Roksolana Tymiak-Lonchyna with the opening of a Black & White photo exhibit of orphaned, neglected and abandoned children of LvivUkraine in October of 2002 at the Ukrainian National Museum in ChicagoIl.

With the help of Sts. Volodynyr and Olha parish, an account was established to gather funds to purchase infant formula for the orphanages.  Her hope is to expand the number of orphanages supported by this fund. To this end, Mrs. Tymiak-Lonchyna has published “Conscience Calls,” which chronicles her experiences of the Orange Revolution of Ukraine.  Beautifully written in English and Ukrainian languages, this 124-page account includes wonderful photographs.  It was published in Lviv, Ukraine, 2005.  Every dollar raised goes to the purchase of infant formula.
